Yachad—the Jewish Housing and Community Development Corporation of Greater
Washington, D.C.
View the agency’s website
Yachad is Hebrew for together. You may know the song taken from Psalm
133:1: “Hineh mah tov umah naim shevet achim gam yachad.”
(“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell in unity.”)
That unity is far more achievable when we dwell in houses that are decently maintained.
Helping the homeless to obtain homes and helping the poor to repair their homes
so that they are safe and secure are commandments that call out to us from the
Torah. Yachad heard the call and leads the Jewish community of Greater Washington
in responding to it. Do you want to help the homeless and the poor, especially
the elderly poor and disabled poor who could not otherwise repair their dwellings?
Then designate a portion of your Amcha contribution for Yachad. It is so easy
to do.
Here is how Yachad describes its operation. “…we pursue our mission
together with synagogues, churches and other nonprofit organizations
working to rebuild urban neighborhoods.
"Building strong and vital communities isn't our only goal. Our mission
is to build bridges too—partnerships between Jews and the diverse neighborhoods
of our extended community. Yachad's partnerships strive to translate our desire
to form interfaith and interracial bonds from words into actions.”
