WUPJ—the World Union for Progressive Judaism
View the agency’s website
Establishing synagogues, religious schools, adult education and Jewish cultural
programs in the FSU, bringing Reform rabbis there and strengthening Progressive
Judaism in a thousand ways all over the world is the essential task of the WUPJ,
the international Reform Jewish organization.
A very large segment of this effort takes place in Israel. There established
ways of political decision-making and funding religious institutions have put
Reform Judaism at a decided disadvantage. Reform bashing from too many officials
within the religious establishment continues unabated. Their comments, proclamations
and articles would be condemned as anti-Semitism were they issuing forth from
non-Jewish mouths and minds. Despite it all, Reform Judaism in Israel continues
to grow rapidly. Large numbers of Israelis think positively about this progressive
alternative to the Israeli rabbinate they know.
With the government providing vast sums of money to the Orthodox establishment,
it is critically important for us to provide whatever support we can to the
legitimate non-Orthodox religious community there: Conservative, Reconstructionist,
and Reform. The work there is terribly hard and immensely necessary. Freedom
of religion should be a non-negotiable requirement in the Jewish State. We suffered
too much for too long as victims of prejudice to accept in our spiritual homeland
prejudice directed by one segment of our community against the others. If you
support freedom of religion in Israel, support WUPJ!
