Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism
View the agency’s website
It is a vast challenge to try to describe briefly the importance and accomplishments
of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism under the direction of the
dynamic, brilliant Rabbi David Saperstein. This is the most effective, highly
regarded social justice headquarters in the American Jewish community. Some
statistics begin to convey the scope of this agency's reach:
“1,500 students attended just one of the six special seminars the RAC ran, during which high school students come to Washington DC for four intensive days focusing on Jewish values and social justice, creative worship services, educational workshops, and interactive programming on critical issues that prepare them to lobby Members of Congress.
500 social action leaders from 200 congregation’s attended the RAC’s 2003 Consultation
on Conscience.
1,000,000 pounds of food collected by more than 500 congregations for MAZON's High Holy Day hunger campaign, which the RAC co-sponsors.
65 major issues monitored constantly by the RAC staff in Washington.
This is an institution favored by national and international leaders in social
justice as a holy place for good and vital works. The Dalai Lama is one of those
leaders. In 1997, he attended a Pesach seder at the RAC during which he sought
greater understanding of the Jewish experience that might help him better lead
his followers. The Religious Action Center stands in a class by itself!
