Operation Understanding, D.C.
View the agency’s website
Operation Understanding, D.C. operates a perfectly constructed program to eliminate
prejudice between African American and Jewish high school students from all over
the Washington metropolitan area. Each January, twenty-four carefully selected
juniors begin this award-winning program. It lasts one year and “is based
on using education and dialogue to change both one's behavior and attitude. The
intense experiential learning is the catalyst for bringing about life-altering
empathy and advancing hope for peace and understanding.” Thus far, the students
who completed the program have carried their discoveries to 20,000 peers! In addition,
hundreds, if not thousands, of family members of these students also became advocates
of Operation Understanding and its message.
“Retreats, workshops, trips, and seminars are all designed to force the
students to scrutinize and modify their own behavior and thoughts, empowering
them to combat discrimination and promote respect.” Each student becomes
an able ambassador for tolerance and understanding.
