Neve Shalom/Wahat Al-Salam, the Oasis of Peace
View the agency’s website
As the Intifada wore on, the vast majority of people on both sides lost hope
in peace and their taste for the work of peace. Not Neve Shalom. Now, as folks
who gave up on peace begin to grasp again that there is no alternative to it,
the consistent efforts of Neve Shalom are once more in the spotlight.
"Neve Shalom/Wahat Al-Salam is the only binational village in Israel” ,
Palestinians and Jews living together side by side, intentionally doing so and
working relentlessly to overcome the divisions that to others seem so insurmountable.
The message of the village is “Peace is possible.” Their educational
programs, encounter workshops and much more at their School for Peace, continued
unabated straight through the tumult. In March, 2003, hundreds of primary school
children and their parents came together in the community's auditorium to celebrate
at once the Muslim New Year, Pesach and Easter.
When relations between Jews and Palestinians were going strong and well, we
saw the opportunity to support hope for a peaceful future by supporting Neve
Shalom. Doing so in the face of such immense challenges is no longer just an
opportunity. It is a necessity!
