New Israel Fund
View the agency’s website
The New Israel Fund backs so many critically important agencies and projects,
it would take an entire book to describe them all. Each of the categories of agencies
Amcha For Tsedakah helps fall into the spectrum of NIF activity. Yes, NIF does
everything possible to encourage the growth of democracy in Israel, and equal
rights for all citizens of Israel. That is enough! But NIF's Shefa Fund, for example,
“organizes millions of dollars in loans from the Jewish community for affordable
housing, job creation and community services.” These mitzvot, these acts
of redemptive good benefit agencies in America! Yes, the NIF Shefa Fund puts money
into creating, for instance, 90 units of subsidized housing in Boston alone. Other
grants were made in San Francisco, Richmond, Atlanta, New York, Portland, and
Oregon.
Then there is the Shatil Fund of NIF. It provides many more millions of dollars
in Israel to help with Ethiopian absorption needs, the development of unrecognized
Bedouin villages in the Negev, alleviating the hardships of single-parent families
and protecting the rights of Arab citizens of Israel.
And, the number one effort and funding cause of NIF is to strengthen Israel by
strengthening its democracy. Let's face the fact that not all Jews want Israel
to abide by democratic values. Many want it to become a theocratic dictatorship.
Others want Palestinian citizens of Israel to suffer humiliation and an erosion
of rights that some Jews hope will drive the Israeli Palestinians away.
Through everything that the NIF does, its focus is to constructively resolve
crises and restore lives to well-being. Their work reminds us at Amcha of the
words appearing in “Gates of Prayer” : “restore the broken fragments
of our world to wholeness again.”
